Dragons are a species of powerful and intelligent magical beings that inhabit the lands of Xadia. They are divided into six types based on their connection to one of the Primal Sources of magic that exist in nature. They appear in the Netflix animated series The Dragon Prince.

Appearance[]

Most types of adult dragons native to Xadia appear as massive, scaled reptiles with horns, four legs, bat-like wings, razor-sharp teeth, slit-shaped pupils, and clawed feet. Hatchlings, or dragonlings, such as the storm dragonling Azymondias, appear to be slightly larger than the magical amphibian species known as Glow Toads and, like most animal offspring, feature a head and limbs that are proportionally too big compared to the rest of their body.

Biology[]

Most types of dragons live for 500 years on average, while Storm Dragons such as Avizandum, Zubeia, and Archdragons such as Sol Regem or Luna Tenebris have lived for over a millennium.

Avizandum

Avizandum, a storm dragon and the king of the dragons of Xadia until his death.

Dragons are oviparous, meaning they lay eggs. How often they reproduce and how many eggs they lay depends on the type of dragon; Storm Dragons in particular reproduce exceedingly rarely, with adults producing an egg once every 1,000 years, with the egg only hatching in the eye of a storm.

Dragons are exceedingly tough and well-armored thanks to their scales, but they are not invulnerable. They can be hurt by weapons of iron and steel, though their effectiveness decreases with the size of the dragon in question. Magic can also hurt, incapacitate, wound or kill them. Two excellent examples of this are Sol Regem, who was permanently blinded by the dark mage Ziard, and Avizandum, who was killed using a spear enchanted with a corrupted unicorn's horn that turned him to stone.

Other Information[]

Some dragons are solitary, while others like to live in groups. The language of the dragons is known as Ancient Draconic. They are also capable of learning human and elven speech upon reaching the age of 75 years old. Beyond this, dragons consider elves their equals and kin due to the strong magic that flows in their veins.

The most powerful of the dragons are called Archdragons, which are many times larger than ordinary dragons with a lifespan of centuries, yet extremely rare. Like Archmages, Archdragons are masters of their Arcanums of their respective elements and have the deepest possible connection to them, as opposed to regular dragons. Some Archdragons are capable of sensing dark magic in humans, but whether this is due to their heightened senses or another reason such as magically enhanced abilities is currently unknown.

Sol Regem

Sol Regem, a Sun Dragon, former king of the dragons, and blinded archdragon.

History[]

Dragons have ruled the magical lands of Xadia alongside elves for thousands of years, and the latter revere them for their magic and power. Traditionally, one of the greatest of the Archdragons is chosen to be granted the title of King or Queen of the Dragons, with Sol Regem, an Archdragon of the Sun, becoming the first known king 1200 years before the modern era.

At some point in history, the human mage Ziard discovered the benefits of of dark magic, a power gifted to him by an unrevealed benefactor, which used the essence contained within magical creatures to cast spells. This power was used to help the dying city of Elarion to flourish. Sol Regem, the reigning King of the Dragons at the time, discovered this destructive development and demanded to surrender the practice of dark magic in its entirety. When Ziard refused, however, Sol Regem declared for the city of Elarion to burn as a punishment. Though Ziard managed to scar and permanently blind Sol Regem with a fireball before he was incinerated, the dragon managed to submerge in a body of water to extinguish the flames, and carried out the destruction of Elarion regardless of the efforts to stop him.

Following these events, 1000 years before the modern era, Sol Regem was succeeded by Luna Tenebris, an Archdragon of the Moon. At first, she agreed with the elves that all humans should be annihilated. But after some convincing by a lone elf, she decided to spare and banish humanity to the western parts of Xadia before splitting the continent in half. This day became known as the "Judgement of the Half-Moon" inside Xadia.

700 years after the division of Xadia, Avizandum, an Archdragon of the Sky and referred by the humans as "Thunder", succeeded Luna Tenebris as the next King of the Dragons and reigned for a total of 300 years. At some point, ancient Archdragons of the Sky sculpted a palace of solid stone at the highest peak of the Storm Spire that would act as the official domicile of King Avizandum, his mate Queen Zubeia, and their unborn son Azymondias. During Avizandum's reign, Archdragons and elves collaborated to seal away the Startouch Elf Aaravos, who had become a danger to their homeland; as a result of Aaravos' machinations and his orchestration of Luna Tenebris' death, the dragons and elves began to turn against one another, until a young human girl from Katolis revealed the truth; Aaravos had been manipulating elves, men and dragons alike for centuries, though for what reason remained unknown. Nevertheless, under Avizandum and Zubeia's leadership, the dragons orchestrated a cunning and clever trap for Aaravos, imprisoning him. The location and map to Aaravos' prison remained split between the Archdragons, who swore to never let him see his freedom again, while the mirror used to view his prison was from then on kept inside the monarchs' lair, so as to ensure he could never escape.

For centuries, Avizandum would jealously guard the Border from any incursions by the Human Kingdoms into Xadia, even killing the queens of Duren, Annika and Neha, and the Queen of Katolis, Sarai. Nine years later, Avizandum was slain by King Harrow and Viren to avenge the queens' deaths. After Avizandum's demise, the humans ransacked his lair and stole many of his possessions, and supposedly destroyed his only egg. In reality, the egg was not destroyed, but secretly stolen by Viren and hidden away inside Katolis Castle. The elves and dragons believed in Viren's deception nonetheless, and Avizandum's mate, Zubeia, ordered Moonshadow Elf assassins to be sent to Katolis and kill King Harrow and Prince Ezran in an act of revenge.

Pyrrah, a fire dragon and one of several types of Sun dragon.

Upon discovering that the Dragon Prince's egg was alive, Callum, Ezran, Rayla, and Bait made it their mission to return the egg to Zubeia. During the trip, the egg had hatched into Azymondias, the future King of the Dragons. Quickly, the young dragonling learned to fly and use his electric abilities. While Team Zym was on their travel, the Fire Dragon Pyrrah got into a conflict with Soren in which she set fire to a town after Soren fired a ballista at her, continuing the cycle of prejudice and hatred between dragons and humans. With Aid from his sister, Claudia, Soren brought down Pyrrah, badly wounding her. She was eventually freed by Soren and Kayla before she could be killed, and badly wounded Soren before leaving, rendering him quadriplegic until he was healed by Claudia's use of dark magic.

Despite meeting Sol Regem while crossing into Xadia and being denied entry due to Callum's use of dark magic (which Callum used to free Pyrrah), Team Zym eventually managed to return Azymondias to the Storm Spire where Zubeia lived. However, due to the grief of losing her mate and son, Zubeia had fallen into a deep, depressive slumber. With Viren marching his forces into Xadia and into Thunderfall, with intention to kill both Azymondias and Zubeia, a flock of Fire Dragons aided the allied forces in fighting against their common enemy in the final battle at the Storm Spire. Claiming victory in battle, Azymondias could finally return to his mother for good, as she awakened from her slumber, happy to witness the reunion of humans and elves and the return of her child.

Following the return of the Dragon Prince and the defeat of Viren's army, dragons are currently at peace with the Human Kingdoms once more. However, with Viren, Claudia, and Terrestrius seeking out the prison, Aaravos threatens Xadia once more.
