Eternatus is a legendary pokemon that was introduced in Pokemon Sword and Shield as a primary antagonist. The pokemon is believed to be an extraterrestrial entity that landed in the Galar Region while inside a meteorite 20,000 years from the present. Eternatus also seems to be responsible for the Dynamax phenomenon, having had according to legend consumed a significant portion of energy that has, since it entered its slumber, leaked out of its core onto the region that enabled the process of Dynamaxing.

In Pokemon Sword and Shield, after being awakened and consuming all the energy in the Galar Region, Eternatus achieves a Eternamax form that serves as a final boss against the player who is accompanied by the legendary pokemon duo Zacian and Zamenzenta. In this form, it is stated in the Pokedex that the Pokemon has an infinite supply of energy and that its presence causes the distortion of space and time.

History

Pre-Series

According to belief: Eternatus had, while inside a meteorite, landed in the Galar Reigon twenty thousand years from the present. It would then awake seventeen thousand years later and go on a rampage, absorbing significant quantities of energy from the Galar Region, this period being known as the Darkest Day. The events of the Darkest Day would then be stopped by either two heroes accompanied by Zacian and Zamenzenta or one hero wielding both a sword or shield depending on interpretation of the legend who would seal Eternatus away.

After Eternatus returned to its slumber, energy from its core would slowly leak out across the land. This energy would collect in certain areas that would cause Pokemon to Dynamax. The energy would also be left as solid particles known as Wishing Pieces, Wishing Chips, and Wishing Stars.

Main Series

During the events of Pokemon Sword and Shield, Eternatus would be reawakened by Chairman Rose, who was also sending various trainers out to collect Wishing Stars to fuel the Pokemon, all of which was done in order to stop the impending energy crisis in the Galar Reigon. Eternatus would break free of Rose’s control however and begin wrecking havoc at the Power Plant he was contained in which was creating subsequent chaos across the region. Champion Leon would try to catch the Pokemon in order to quell it, however Eternatus would effortlessly resist the attempted capture.

Eternatus then challenges the player, and after losing the fight, it gathers the energy it still has and ascends into the sky, transforming into its Eternamax form. After failing to do anything of use against the Pokmeon due to its overwhelming power, the Player and Hop use the Sword and Shield relics they had previously acquired to summon Zacian and Zamenzenta. The four then battle Eternatus, with the player eventually being able to capture it after significantly weakening it.

Anime

Eternatus is introduced in the episode Flash of the Titans where it passes the plane Ash and Goh are on that is set to arrive in the Galar Region, its presence causing a power shortage. It then appears in a flashback in the episode Sword and Shield: The Darkest Day.

Eternatus would see its first major appearance in Sword and Shield: From here to Eternatus, where it escapes its containment in the Energy Plant and begins causing damage to it. When Leon sends out his Charizard, it escapes the Energy Plant by breaking through the ceiling and flies to the top of the Hammerlocke Stadium where it begins to collect energy. In Sword and Shield… The Legend Awakens, Eternatus enters its Eternamax form after Leon fails to catch it, and proceeds to battle Ash and Goh who are accompanied by Zacian and Zacamenta. In the end, the four manage to defeat Eternatus, with Goh than capturing the Pokemon and sealing it away underground.

TCG

Eternatus has had two cards printed, Eternatus V and Eternatus V-Max. Since its release, Eternatus V-Max has had seen play in the competitive scene, seeing frequent play in Champion Leagues.

Abilities

Eternatus has two signature moves: Dynamax Cannon and Eternabeam, both of which project a beam of energy against the target that both deal double the usual damage against Dynamaxed pokemon. When using Eternabeam, Eternatus will briefly assume its Eternamax form to perform the move, and akin to Hyper Beam, Eternatus must recharge after using the move in the games.

In the anime, Pokemon that are affected by Etertanus’s Dynaxmax Cannon attack are transformed into their dynamaxed forms, which causes them to act chaotic.

Trivia

• In base form, Eternatus is the tallest Pokemon in the series sans his Eternamax form as well as tied with Groudon for the fourth heaviest.

• Eternatus’s Eternamax form has a base stat total of 1,125, which is the highest stat total in the series.

• Eternatus is the first poison type legendary pokemon

• In the anime, Eternatus is initially only referred to as “The Darkest Day” before being named Eternatus by Chairman Rose.
