A Faerie Dragon is a species of dragon from Dungeons & Dragons. Faerie dragons are curious and witty creatures that love to play pranks on the unsuspecting, having a mischievous sense of humor.[1]
Appearance[]
Faerie dragons have slim builds with a pair of platinum-colored butterfly wings. It is noted to always have a “sharp-toothed grin” unless under attack, and shows its happiness by twitching its long tail.[2]
Faerie dragons change color as they age, beginning at red (5 years or less) and followed by orange (6-10 years), yellow (11-20 years), green (21-30 years) blue (31-40 years), indigo (41-50 years), and then violet (51 years or more). The dragons mature quickly at the cost of having shorter lives than other dragons.[1]
Combat[]
Unless cornered or defending its lair, Faerie Dragons tend to avoid combat, preferring to redirect potential intruders and lure them towards the more powerful fey creatures instead of confronting them directly. If engaged however, they prefer to fight from afar, utilizing their magical powers and breath weapon and will only go into melee after having used the latter.[2] Contrary to the former behavior, flocks of faerie dragons are noted to go on the offensive against intruders.[3]
Relations[]
Faerie dragons have a preference to be in the company of the fey, as well as wild animals and chaotic creatures that enjoy its sense of humor. Nonetheless, faerie dragons crave novelty, resulting in any creature being able to capture their interest, even if only temporarily.[4]
Lairs and Terrain[]
Many faerie dragons build lairs near portals to the Feywild, while others live amongst other peoples. A faerie dragon’s lair is “as varied and eccentric” as themselves.[4]
While within their lairs, a green or older faerie dragon can manipulate the magic of their lairs to conjure a wave of magic that makes ranged attacks hit any creature within the dragon's vicinity at random or summon a collection of roots and vines around it. A faerie dragon’s lair also warps the area around it to cause creatures within one mile of it to compulsively leave an offering worth at least 5 gold pieces, for time to become fluid and flow at half or twice its normal speed and causing sentient creatures that spend a year within five miles of the lair to have the urge to play pranks on others.[4]
Treasure[]
Faerie dragons are as covetous as their larger dragon cousins, however they are not as discerning. This leads to a faerie dragon’s treasure hoard being a mixture of actual wealth and trash, with the dragon putting more emphasis on the stories around each item than the items worth. These dragons may get their treasure though being bribed by tributes, although they also do have a tendency to “burrow” any random object that it catches its eye on.[4]
Powers and Abilities[]
A faerie dragon has an euphoric breath that renders the target either walking in a random direction or entirely motionless. They are resistant to magic and can magically turn invisible for as long as it concentrates.[1] Faerie dragons also have various innate spells which vary depending on depiction.
