Flying Wyverns (Japanese: 飛竜種 Hiryūshu) are a class of monsters that most closely resemble the classic wyvern, in most cases. They are all four-limbed and mostly reptilian in nature, with some deviations such as Nargacuga, Gigginox, Akantor and Khezu to name a few. It is believed by some that they share a common ancestor in the extinct monster known as Wyvern Rex.
Biology[]
All flying wyverns have four limbs/will develop four limbs in the case of giggis. While most flying wyverns have wings and are able to fly some wyverns such as Akantor or Ukanlos are flightless, only having small traces of forewings on their forearms.
The hide of a flying wyvern varies for each species, such as scales for Diablos and Tigrex, carapace for Rathalos and Astalos, hide for Khezu and Gigginox, minerals for Basarios and Gravios; and finally fur for Nargacuga and Barioth just to name a few.
Wyverns seem to have two main base skeletons, the True Wyvern skeleton is bipedal, walks only it’s two legs and is the more common of the two. The other is the Pseudo-Wyvern skeleton which has the ability to walk on all fours and are usually more agile or more powerful then usual.
Notes[]
- Flying Wyverns are the most common class of monsters in the Monster Hunter series.
- Flying Wyverns like Akantor and Ukanlos seem to more closely resemble the more mammalian and grounded Fanged Wyverns.
- This could mean they are a missing evolutionary link between the two classes.
