Gem Dragons are a variant of dragonkind in Dungeons & Dragons, named after several jewels. All Gem Dragons have inherent psionic powers, can rely on only elemental matter for substance,[1] and are isolationists in nature, residing in areas far off from any notable population such as the Inner Planes[1] and socialize usually only for mating purposes.. The dragons hold reverence for Sardior, a mysterious Ruby Dragon deity who resides in a floating citadel that holds a council of five dragons, known as the Thanes, that represent each type of gem dragon (sans the Obsidian Dragon).[2][3]
Akin to other true dragons, Gem Dragons share a respectful charisma. Contrary to their isolationist nature, Gem Dragons are known to show exceptional social aptitude and serve as excellent hosts in cases where they do interact with others.[2] Like other true dragons as well, they have a high desire to collect treasure, collecting piles of coins and aim to gather as much gems, jewels, and magic items as possible.[1]
History[]
According to the "Elegy for the First World" poem, a poem that details a first world created before the current Material Plane by Tiamat and Bahamut, Sardior was the first creation of Tiamat and Bahamut. Sardior would aid her creators in creating the Chromatic and Metallic dragons respectively. Some interpreters of the poem theorize Sardior had died with the destruction of the First World, with her shattered consciousness manifesting in the emergence of Gem Dragons across the multiverse.[4]
