The Prismatic Dragon is a race of epic dragons in Dungeons and Dragons. They are the most sociable of the Epic Dragons and enjoy interacting with humanoids.

The Prismatic Dragon is associated with light, which is seen through its breath weapon and its appearance.

Appearance[]

At birth, Prismatic Dragon wrymlings are covered in bright reflective scales which is further enhanced by an aura of multicolored light. As they get older, their scales become smoother akin to a snake and become more durable, even being remarked as indestructible.[1]

Prismatic Dragons emit no odor.

Habits[]

Personality[]

Prismatic Dragons are optimistic creatures that value the sheer diversity of life as well as the vast spectrum of the human persona. While they do not go out of their way to socialize with humanoid communities, they are always welcoming to visitors.[1]

Diet[]

Prismatic Dragons eat any type of meat, and it is speculated they consume light itself. They eat little in comparison to their mass. When hunting, they search for prey over a long distance to make sure not to deplete more resources then needed. They also make sure not to anger cattle ranchers.[1]

Combat[]

Prismatic Dragons avoid hostile encounters or combat unless they are provoked, and if they must engage they will prefer to engage socially with its potential opponent first to get a good understanding of the creature's nature.[1]

In combat, the dragon utilizes its breath weapon, claws, and spell-like abilities, using different tactics depending on the opponent.[1]

Lairs and Terrain[]

Prismatic Dragons are flexible in choosing where they wish to build their lairs. While some prefer to live in isolation, others prefer to live near human civilization such as a sea cave under a port city. [1]

Powers and Abilities[]

The Prismatic Dragon’s breath weapon is a cone of seven lights, each effect varying based on color, making their breath weapon unpredictable and powerful. Beginning at birth, a Prismatic Dragon is surrounded by a force of light, which are capable of deflecting ranged attacks. This shield of light also grants the dragon immunity to blinding effects and light sources.[1]

As it ages, The Prismatic Dragon gains access the following spell-like abilities

  • Hypnotic Pattern (At will)- The Dragon creates a pattern of subtle, dazzling colors that renders those within it in an entranced state that prevents them from taking actions
  • Rainbow Pattern (At will)- The Dragon creates a pattern of bright colors that affects those similar to that of the Hypnotic Pattern spell. The Dragon can then move the pattern, with those affected instinctually following it.
  • Prismatic Sphere (3/day)- The Dragon summons a sphere of light that does the same effect as the Prismatic Spray spell does on those within it
  • Prismatic Wall (3/day)- The Dragon summons a wall of blinding light that shines seven colors. Each color emanates an effect akin to the Prismatic Spray spell. The wall can be destroyed from color to color, however it has to be done in the following order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
  • Sunbeam (3/day)- The dragon shoots out a beam of intense light from its hand for up to one minute. The beam is capable of blinding those that it directly hits.
  • Sunburst (3/day)- The dragon chooses a point up to four hundred meters where it than drops a globe of sizzling light that does immense damage, as well as being able to blind those that come into contact with it.

Prismatic Dragons also, like other dragons, can innately learn Sorcerer spells, with the Prismatic Dragon being the only dragon in their sample statblocks to have the spell Wish, arguably the most powerful spell in the series
